Caffe Breve is a creamy American variation of Italian cafe latte that uses half-and-half cream instead of milk.
Breve is more fluid than other drinks made of coffee because half-and-half increases the foam and, obviously, the fat content. It is generally consumed as a “dessert” beverage, but it can also be a flavorful treat on any day.
Interesting fact: The coffee is named after the Italian word breve, which means short.

Step 1 – Froth the Half and Half
For a microwave:
Put half and half in an oven-safe bowl or measuring cup. Then, microwave it on high until hot, with a few bubbles on their edges (approx. 1 minute).
Note: keep it uncovered
Once done, remove from the microwave and begin to whisk vigorously. While doing this, place your whisk in your palms, and then move it back and forth.
Gently scoop it into a different cup when the foam begins to form. Continue to whisk until you have approximately 1/3 cup foam.
For a steamer:
Steam and froth half-and-half between 145 and 160°F. Froth it and let it settle while you prepare espresso.
Step 2 – Prepare the Espresso
Now it’s time to make your coffee shots, and you can do that using an espresso machine, stovetop Moka pot, or portable espresso maker. For this recipe, I am using a Handpresso.
If you don’t own an espresso maker, you can use strong coffee brewed using your preferred method.
Step 3 – Combine the espresso and half and half
Take the coffee mug, add the espresso, then slowly pour in the warm half-and-half.
If you have not set the foam aside, keep it in place with a spoon as you add the creamer into the espresso.
Now spread the foam that you saved onto the top.
Sprinkle the top with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, or any topping you prefer for added flair.
